Interviewer: What’s freedom to you?
Nina Simone: What’s freedom to me? Same thing it is to you. You tell me.
Interviewer: No, you tell me. [laughs][Shut up!][laughs]Is that a topic for such a long…
Nina Simone: It’s just a feeling. [pause] It’s just a feeling. [pause] It’s like how you tell somebody how it feels to be in love. Are you going to tell anybody who have not been in love, how it feels to be in love. You cannot do it to save your life. You can describe things, but you can’t tell them. But you know it when it happens. That’s what I mean by free. I had a couple times on stage when I really felt free! And that’s something else. That’s really something else. Like all, all... Like... Like... I’ll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear. [pause] I mean, really, no fear. [pause] If I... If I could have that [pause] half of my life… no fear. [pause] That’s what children have: no fear. That’s the closest… that’s the only way I could describeit. That’s not all of it, but it is something to really, really feel.

Doctors Without Borders, also known internationally by our French name Médecins Sans Frontières, or MSF, is an independent medical humanitarian organization. Founded in 1971, MSF won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. Today we have some 33 000 staff on the ground, in roughly 70 countries. We treat people based on medical needs alone, regardless of race, religion or political affiliation.

I’d like to introduce the autobiography of my good friend and neighbor Jim West. In 1946, at the age of 1, Jim contracted polio. Suddenly, a world of infinite possibilities collapsed in upon him. Everything was now a struggle: breathing, lifting his arms, learning to walk… Nothing came easily. And the suffering wasn’t just physical; gradually, he learned about rejection: the subtle and not so subtle messages that society delivers to the weak and deformed. To protect himself, walls went up. This meant that in various ways he was also emotionally paralyzed. Wasn’t a promising start, but nevertheless, his life has been remarkable.

John: This whole issue of… can I say black hair? etc. and and and this this this attempt to make black people confirm I, can I use the term European standards? etc. I mean, what is, what is your take on this, Brian, on this big debate?
Brian: Well, you know, I’ve found that there is a big trend happening in the industry, John, with women moving away from relaxers towards their natural hair. And I think that’s a good thing, in fact, I hold classes to, basically, kind of instruct them, you know, how to care for their natural hair. Uh... but I think it’s an acceptance of who they are, as opposed to trying to conform to someone else’s standards of beauty. So I think it’s a positive thing.

“We were talking about the government, we were talking about what was going on in Vietnam, the Cultural Revolution in China, the Japanese student’s movement. [...] The things that were animating them were the things that were animating our, you know, whole generation. The war in Vietnam in particular. Difficult to explain now to people how much that war did to radicalize us. […]. The world’s largest, most powerful military nation bombing what was essentially a peasant country. They were deliberately targeting civilians.” (Tariq Ali)
“The youth of that time were saving, ‘we don’t like the world we were born into. We want it to be different. We want to change it’.” (Dan Richter)

Many boxing purists still refer to Muhammad Ali as the best fighter to ever grace a boxing ring. Ali relied on his superior hand speed, reflexes and constant movement, dancing and circling opponents for most of the fight. His footwork was so strong that it was extremely difficult for opponents to cut down the ring and corner Ali against the ropes. It was the style that saw Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, win multiple world heavyweight titles. Ali was not without controversy and often found himself in trouble with the authorities because of his outspoken nature. Ali was outspoken about religious freedom and racial injustice against young African Americans.
