Hit the road
In pairs, you are going to create a meme. Remember you have already seen examples of memes inTask 1 (Reading).
1. Before preparing your meme, pay close attention to the following chart.
For the written production
What is the discursive genre?Meme.
What is the theme?The digital world.
What is the objective?To make fun of the digital environment.
At whom is it aimed?Your classmates.
How and where is it going to be presented?On the classroom bulletin board.
Who is going to participate?All students, organized into pairs.
Toolboxtúlbóks
Follow these steps. They will help you prepare your meme.
Remember that memes are usually related to a real-world situation and provoke the reader to reflect on what he or she has just read. It might be a good idea to use topics that promote a discussion in class.
Think about an interesting theme related to the digital world in broad terms. It can be associated with how people use technology or about social media situations, for example. You can look for some interesting facts regarding technology in a newspaper or magazine and outline the most curious and exciting ideas. You can also try to remember an exciting thing or a fun situation that happened to you or to your classmates concerning the digital world.
Think of a short statement for your meme. Make sure you use the best words or expressions to communicate your ideas in English. Remember that in this kind of text it is very common to see the usage of “netspeak”, informal language and abbreviations. Memes also tend not to follow strict rules of punctuation.
Choose an image to create a background. It can be a drawing of yours or illustrations and photographs from different sources. The most common meme formats follow the style of a top-bottom text with a background image. Do not forget that memes must be easily understood and tend to have a humorous content.
Use a computer or paper cards to produce your memes. Large font size will make your work more visible and understandable. A good idea is to include letters in different colors from the one on the background or paper card.
Make a draft of your work and read through it to check whether you enjoyed or not what you have written. If you have fun, your meme will probably make other people laugh and be entertained as well. Make sure that both verbal and non-verbal elements of your meme are not offensive to a particular person or social group. Present a first version of your meme to another pair and ask for their feedback on what could be improved.
Page one hundred and sixteen
Step backistép béqui
After getting your classmates’ feedback, check if your meme has the following characteristics:
it is based on a topic that promotes a discussion and leads to reflection;
it uses vocabulary and grammar patterns that are suitable for memes;
it uses a top-bottom text layout and a background image;
it has humorous content.
2. Now display your meme on a classroom bulletin board. Read your classmates’ memes and discuss your impressions with them.
